Menopause not Mad!

I am a Menopausal Woman!!

There! I’ve said it and I’m not taking it back – I couldn’t even if I wanted to!

The menopause nearly took me down! But I’ve resurfaced as a more informed and stronger person, so I really hope these few words will help you to bypass the crappy part.

When I think back to my teens I know now that my own mother was really struggling with the onset of peri menopause symptoms; but of course in the 1980s it was a big secret and only referred to in hushed whispers by women huddled around bottles of wine and cigarettes. (if at all!)

My mother cried a lot, drank a lot and was very unpredictable from the ages of about 42 to 50.

I have had my own unexplained physical and emotional issues for many years but nothing bad enough to really alert me to the menopause, and even as recently as 10 years ago (when I was quite clearly peri menopausal), no link was ever made for me, or by me, that I was on this new journey to what seemed like insanity.

The penny only dropped for me around 12-16 months ago, when I was beginning to feel very odd indeed!

I wasn’t just moody! I was a bitch from bitchland! and 3 particular symptoms just floored me.

Firstly I was SOOOO tired I was struggling to get out of bed in the morning – My limbs felt like lead, and believe me I could have slept for days if I’d had the time.

Secondly I was experiencing really unpleasant tingling/shock feelings all over, which felt like little bugs crawling all over me from the inside!

But the worst symptom for me was the general foggy and dizzy feeling which, along with the above symptoms, made me feel as if I could collapse at any time (I didn’t, but not quite sure how I managed that)

Cutting a very long story short I was back and forth to my doctor receiving a wide variety of advice and clearly getting a reputation as a slightly depressed and stressed woman.

This may have been true but my response was that this was a result of the physical symptoms rather than the symptoms being a result of depression.

Fast forward a few more months and I’m now on HRT – What a JOY to behold!

I’m back!

For those of you worried about HRT then you might like to become more informed, as things have changed a lot.

HRT is much safer and more in tune with your body now (although not recommended for every woman).

I have since tried HRT combined tablets, HRT patches and now progesterone tablets with oestrogen gel. It takes a while to get HRT right for you and your needs but the most recent change seems to work for me (for now) but I will be reassessing on an ongoing basis.. as should you.

Here are SOME of the possible symptoms (although some women do sail through the menopause with no issues at all – lucky beggars!).

It’s a long list and this isn’t even all of it!

  12. Difficulty Concentrating
  13. Memory Loss
  14. Dizziness
  15. Weight Gain
  16. Incontinence
  17. Bloating
  18. Irregular heartbeat
  19. Depression
  20. Anxiety
  21. Breast pain
  22. Headaches
  23. Electric Shock sensations
  24. Itchy, crawly skin
  25. Tingling all over

 

Don’t misunderstand me … I’m not a doom monger about this stage of life as it’s fabulous in many ways.. once you take the annoying stuff out the of picture.

Knowledge is power and in my role as a body positivity coach, I regularly identify many emotions and physical symptoms in my clients, that could be attributed to the menopause so I’m able to offer support and practical guidance/solutions alongside my expert partners in this area.

Don’t accept becoming a lesser version of yourself as you hit your 40s, 50s and beyond! You are capable of even better than before.
